What is Public Administration?

Lead the Way to Lasting Change

What about Public Administration makes it a growing, valuable field? A Public Administration degree applies to a diverse range of job markets. Government work, non-profit organizations, and private corporations are three markets where Public Administration is particularly relevant. The main role of a Public Administrator is to help organizations, public or private, apply policies and programs that the organization needs in order to function. In other words, do what they say they’re going to do. Learn more about Public Administration Careers.

More than Public Service

Many think that Public Administration is limited to government work. But private corporations need the same kind of skilled workers to help their company stay on track.

Today, the demand for these skilled workers is growing. Every organization has important principles and policies that help them function. The application, maintenance, and practice of these values rely heavily on the talents of Public Administration professionals.

Things like processing and analyzing information, practicality, pragmatism, and effective communication are all used frequently by professionals in this field. Looking for more information about Public Administration and what it takes to get your MPA? Check out our Industry News page for more.

The Father of Public Administration Woodrow Wilson

President Woodrow Wilson is often called the father of Public Administration because of his in depth look at what necessitates the profession and why it is so valuable. In his essay The Study of Administration he writes, “It is the object of administrative study to discover, first, what government can properly and successfully do, and, secondly, how it can do these proper things with the utmost possible efficiency and at the least possible cost either of money or of energy”.

President Wilson  speaks mainly of the need for administration within the government, but as time goes on, and private corporations get bigger and, in turn, more complicated, the need for the same kind of skills is growing all the time elsewhere in the job market.
